The Municipal Aerodrome of Ponte de Sor hosts the Portugal Air Summit, standing out as a modern and versatile facility after significant expansion in recent years. It offers unique conditions for the development of the aerospace and aviation industry, attracting increasing interest from stakeholders. The aerodrome has established a unique industrial cluster in Ponte de Sor, positioning itself as a key national player in the sector.
1– What is the current importance of the Municipal Aerodrome of Ponte de Sor in the national airport context, and what are the prospects for its management considering the integration of new companies related to aerial work, training, or the aerospace sector?
The investment made in the Municipal Aerodrome of Ponte de Sor over the past two decades has contributed significantly to its development, positioning it as a leading infrastructure in the national airport landscape. It has attracted companies involved in training, aircraft maintenance, and production. The integration of new companies, both in the aeronautical and aerospace sectors, remains a key objective. Continued investment in infrastructure and technical capacity ensures effective management and coordination of current and future activities at the aerodrome.
2 – Do you consider it feasible that Ponte de Sor could become a stop for a regional passenger transport service in the future?
Installing a regional passenger transport service at the Municipal Aerodrome of Ponte de Sor, from both a technical and management perspective, would not pose a significant challenge. The investments made in the infrastructure have prepared it to continue evolving and diversifying its activities.
3 – Is the aerodrome one of the main assets and an investment attraction hub for the integrated development of Ponte de Sor and Alto Alentejo?
The infrastructure of the Municipal Aerodrome, in terms of the quality of its buildings, runway characteristics, and operating conditions, is highly attractive for investment. As a job generator, it is one of Ponte de Sor’s main assets and plays a crucial role in the integrated development of the region.

4 – How important is the Portugal Air Summit for the Aerodrome?
The Municipal Aerodrome of Ponte de Sor serves as the “Stage” for the Portugal Air Summit. All visitors and participants, representing the aerospace and aviation business sectors, get to know the infrastructure and its potential, turning them into potential investors. There is no better business card or advertisement for the aerodrome.
5 – Are there available lands suitable for extending the runway and creating new facilities for companies and industries in the airport sector? Are there any plans or projects for future airport infrastructure growth?
The aerodrome has available land for constructing buildings and installing new companies. In the near future, it is planned to expand the taxiway, connecting it to the factory area where the first Portuguese airplane, LUS 222, will be built, as part of the Aero.Next mobilizing agenda. The Municipal Master Plan of Ponte de Sor has a reserved area for runway expansion, if necessary.
6 – As the director of the Ponte de Sor Aerodrome for several years, what is your vision (or ambition) for this site in the near future?
I foresee an increase in aeronautical activity at the Ponte de Sor Aerodrome through the implementation of RNP (Required Navigation Performance) and ILS (Instrument Landing System) precision approach procedures under IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions). These navigation aids will enable the use of the runway in adverse weather conditions. The installation of new companies in the region and expansion into the aerospace sector will contribute to sustainable growth, driving the local economy.
