Metaverse in aviation: how airlines can take advantage of this technology

The Metaverse is an emerging technology that is making waves in many industries and could also have an impact on aviation, particularly on the day-to-day operations of airlines. We open the book to this reality, which will be discussed in the conference program of the Portugal Air Summit – Flying 4 Change.

The Metaverse is a kind of new layer of virtual reality, a shared digital space that integrates the real and virtual worlds, in an immersive environment built through various technologies in which users from any corner of the world can interact with each other, work, study and have a social life, fully immersing themselves in the online world.

Although often associated with games, the metaverse has far-reaching potential in several sectors, allowing companies to visualize and explore challenges in their activity in new ways and test new scenarios before implementing changes in the real world.

How to apply the metaverse to the aviation sector

Aviation, an industry that is often at the forefront of technological innovation, could also benefit from this technology, with airlines being able to provide unique and immersive experiences to employees and customers, revolutionizing the way they experience air travel.

One of its main features is the creation of highly accurate and detailed 3D models that allow for the simulation of the airport and airplane experience.

For travelers, this functionality could translate into greater comfort before and during their trip, allowing them to plan their trip more easily and streamline the check-in process with virtual check-in options, flight reservations, seat configurations and analysis of onboard amenities.

By leveraging the metaverse’s simulation capabilities, engineering teams can virtually evaluate and validate various aspects of aircraft design aircraft and airports. This allows for rapid adjustments, reducing the time and cost associated with creating physical prototypes, identifying flaws and challenges in projects early on, ensuring even safer and more efficient solutions for aviation.

For teams working directly at airports, the metaverse can be an important ally by simulating passenger flows, baggage management processes and security protocols to optimize their reactions during periods of special affluence, simplifying operations.

Still in the simulation aspect, aircraft manufacturers can also evaluate cabin configurations, seat layout and on-board systems to improve comfort, safety and the overall passenger experience.

The metaverse has the power to create a more immersive and personalized travel experience, bridging the gap between the digital world and reality. By carefully assessing opportunities, airlines can use the metaverse to simulate various scenarios and develop case studies to better prepare themselves, plan and adapt to the future.

The digital transition in the aviation, aeronautics, space and defense sectors is one of the major challenges that stakeholders will need to prepare for and will be one of the topics to be discussed at the 7th edition of the Portugal Air Summit.
